‘Memoirs of an imperfect Angel’ Review

Mariah Carey Memoirs of an imperfect Angel

So here is the review I wrote:-

Mariah Carey returns to the music scene this week with her 12th studio album, Memoirs of an imperfect Angel, an album that does not reflect the apparent bliss she has been trumpeting for the past year. Need I mention it one more time? She has only been flaunting her marriage to the world over the last year and unless you took up residence in a cave, you would know Mariah married Nick Cannon, who is 11 years her junior, in May last year. Since then, Nick has seen his status escalate to new heights with choice roles as the new chairman of TeenNick (formerly known as Nickelodeon), hosting President Barack Obama’s Neighborhood Inaugural Ball and hosting the fourth season of America’s Got Talent, to name just a few gigs he scored since marrying Mariah. Mariah has brought him to almost all her public appearances and it has been a kitschy “public display of affection” cringe-fest where she is constantly seen bringing him onstage, leaning into him, talking about him, tackily hugging and kissing him and basically feeding the hungry cameras.

So it is a surprise that Memoirs of an imperfect Angel is not a sugary sweet extension of her current state of euphoric happiness. What a relief that is! Imagine if it was an album full of more “I love Nick Cannon, I am so happy, sex with Nick is so good, I’m in love, yeay me!” narcissistic and plastic taunts, she would completely lose her fan base.

It was slightly more than a year ago that she released E=MC2 with much fanfare and promotion. From this album spawned her 18th Billboard Hot 100 No.1 Touch My Body and a No. 1 spot on the U.S. Billboard 200 Album Chart selling an impressive 463,000 copies of the album in her first week alone. E=MC2 would have scored Mariah more No.1s as it was an album made to succeed, riding on the waves of The Emancipation of Mimi, released in 2005, with track after track of radio-friendly hits that had “longevity” and “winner” written all over them. However, she abandoned the project right at the start and left it to fade away. Even though her team tried to revive the album and promotion later on in the year it was too late. Damage was done and it is no wonder that Memoirs of an imperfect Angel was released so soon after.

On the first listen, you may feel like Memoirs of an imperfect Angel is boring, bland and that the songs sound very similar to one another. On the second listen, it may start to depress you because it lacks the energetic vibe that The Emancipation of Mimi and E=MC2 had.

The third time is the charm and when you listen to it one more time to give the album a chance, it dawns on you that this is not an ordinary album. It is not just an album full of manufactured formulated chart-toppers but is Mariah telling a story and is meant to be treated like what the title suggests – a memoir.

Memoirs of an imperfect Angel is anything but a happy blissful album. There is only one song, The Impossible, that Mariah says is dedicated to her husband Nick. Everything else is about an ex-lover(s), someone who broke her heart and hurt her so bad that she is still reeling from the after-effects of that relationship.

The album has a cohesive structure and the songs are interconnected through lyrics and rhythm and are inter-related, almost as if she is speaking to one person in particular.

It is brave that Mariah Carey took this direction for her new album because it really has a story to tell, from being hurt by a lover who cheated, to being angry, to reminiscing, to feelings of remorse, to discovering redemptive love, pining for a lost love and finally maybe, accepting that one relationship has ended and a new, refreshing and real love has taken over.

How many albums can you truly think of that incorporate lyrical storytelling from start to finish? It is a big risk because of the advent of iTunes where people place their importance on singles rather than albums and the music industry is constantly churning out hits in order to grab the attention of the marketplace. Mariah has always had a knack for creating listenable, likeable and memorable hits as is evident from her repertoire and reputation as a current mainstream music artist even after 20 years in the industry.

The new single and end track of her album is a pop ballad flavored cover of Foreigners’ I Wanna Know What Love Is and will be a clear favorite among Adult Contemporary listeners. It may attract the younger ones to rediscover this amazing gospel-infused song that topped the charts 25 years ago. The song provides some of Mariah’s trademark nerve-tingling, earth shattering high notes.Let us not forget the radio-friendly track Obsessed with its catchy hook and chorus that can be sung to anybody whom you think is slightly delusional and crazy.

There is a raw passion and sentiment flowing throughout the album and her vocals are tinged with emotion; it is obvious right at the start with her opening track, Betcha Gon’ Know. The intensity is breathtaking and sets the tone for the rest of the album. The catchier tracks like Candy Bling, Standing O, Up Out My Face and It’s a Wrap are disguised as upbeat songs but are actually songs where she is lashing out at this said ex-lover who had hurt her and you can really hear the pain and regret she goes through in these songs.

On closer reflection, each song is like an entry in a diary and it almost feels like a movie in audio format. What distinguishes Memoirs of an imperfect Angel from her previous two albums is it hardly has any airy, danceable songs. There is nothing on this album that screams “party track” except perhaps Obsessed, and she has already released that as her first single.

Also if you are wondering if there are any Mariah Carey-esque styled ballads on this album like We Belong Together and Don’t Forget About Us, her 16th and 17th Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles respectively, then you will be sorely disappointed. Angels Cry is probably the closest you will find on her new offering yet it feels like an uninspired forgettable younger sibling of her famed No. 1s.

Languishing (the interlude) can be considered one of the most outstanding off Memoirs of an imperfect Angel. It channels some of Mariah’s most reflective moments from previous albums like Looking In from Daydream. Technically, the album has been well-produced with Mariah, C. “Tricky” Stewart and “The Dream” Nash layering the tracks well to create a rare gem of an album.

Ultimately, it is so interlaced with grief and sorrow that it makes you wonder why she has released her most painful and reflective album to date at the height of her apparent happiness. Nonetheless, it is Mariah at her best and you can tell she put her soul into it. If you want a frank portrayal of the superstar, look no further than this effort.

Concert review: Mariah Carey at DAR Constitution Hall

The legendary songstress Mariah Carey gave a somewhat spirited performance last night during her 90-minute show at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington.

At times, Carey was magical. She showed off the incredible vocal range that has made her arguably one of the top female vocalists of her time.

She also displayed a noticeably heftier figure that she squeezed for dear life into unflattering outfits. (At one point, when she descended from the rafters on a swing wearing a sparkly champagne-colored gown, she looked sort of like a sausage wrapped in ruffles and rhinestones.)

Although Carey emerged at about 8:30 p.m. and ended the show about 10 p.m., her actual performance time was much shorter.

If you count the outfit changes, the stage breaks she took to sip champagne and the ultra tacky onstage makeup touch-up, Carey only performed for about an hour ...

"I know. I know. It's diva behavior," she said to the audience.

She wasn't joking.

It was truly unfortunate for fans who paid as much as $149 a ticket to watch Carey rhythmlessly wobble from one side of the stage to the other.

Carey only sang about a dozen songs. (It seemed like more Michael Jackson songs were played during her concert than her own material.) Absent were "Vision of Love," "Emotions" and "One Sweet Day."

A dozen or so songs for an artist starting out is understandable. But for Carey, who has 20 years of solid material -- "We Belong Together" was recently named song of the decade by Billboard -- it is completely unforgivable. Shame on you, Mariah. Shame.

Carey was golden when she performed hits like "Shake It Off" and "It's Like That" from 2005's "Emancipation of Mimi" and "Touch My Body" from 2008’s E=MC². They were all crowd pleasers.

On more than one occasion, Carey attempted to show off her whistle register (when she hits those really, really high notes). When Carey began a song with the whistle register, like she did with "It’s A Wrap," she was golden.Sadly, Carey had a tendency to lose that note when the music blared in the background -- especially at the end of a song.

Toss in a couple more songs -- the crowd pleaser "Always Be My Baby," "My All" from "Honey" and "Obsessed," as well as some background dancers and that was it, folks.

Overall, it was a disappointment. We all know that Carey can sing the phonebook. We know that she has an arsenal of hits. And we all know that she is capable of bringing down the house. I just wish that she would have put all of these weapons together for a concert that didn’t cut corners.

Mariah Carey Angel's Advocate Tour Live Vocal Range: C3-Eb7

Made by Murtaza

Within this video I capture all of the notes MC has shown in her 7th tour, the Angels Advocate tour. Mariah has shown an extensive live vocal range, her chest voice is in great shape, she's doing C5s effortlessly, and she belts out E5's with sincere passion and emotion. Her lower register still has a lot of depth, fullness and tone. Mariah hasn't shown this much range in every register and overall since the Daydream era, I think it's safe to say this is her 3rd prime! It was truly a pleasure making this video. Lambs forever :)

PS: My fave note is the Migrate D5 belt it's so powerful!

*Lower Register*
=C3, Eb3, E3, F3, F#3, G3

*Upper Chest Register*
=C5, C#5, D5, Eb5, E5, F5, F#5, G5, G#5 (:O Can you believe it? LOL, take that haters LMAO)

Head Voice Register
=G#5, A5, Bb5, B5, C6, D6, Eb6 (No C#6)

*Super Head/Whistle Register*
=Eb6, E6, F6, F#6, G6, G#6, A6, Bb6, B6, C7, C#7, D7, Eb7

Enjoy watching ma lamberts :)
PS: What's your favourite note?
PPS: I am aware that the tour is not over yet, so if she does some notes that deserve to be in this video I will re-upload and update this video :)

Mariah at the SAG awards - 1/23/10

WOW! Mariah is really keeping up with this award season! For the SAGs, she was up with the trend: Red Gowns. This beautiful (David Meister?!) one-shouldered crimson gown. She matched all her accessories with the gown, keeping them "simple" in red and diamonds. I love the chandelier earrings. The encrusted bag looks like Jimmy Choo.

I think she looks absolutely gorgeous, deserving of a position in the Best Dressed list. However, to be quite honest, I like the Golden Globes look better. What do you think?

Mariah Carey's balanced diet

Mariah Carey admits she has to watch what she eats and refuses to mix her proteins and carbohydrates.

Mariah Carey refuses to mix her proteins and carbohydrates. The 'Hero' singer admits she has to watch her diet and is careful to balance out her food groups, as well as undertaking regular exercise. She said: 'My diet consists of not a lot of oil or butter and eating starch separate from protein - so if I have rice, I can't have meat at the same time. I also do water aerobics, swimming and Pilates.' Mariah also says she has learned to accept her curvy body as she will never be able to slim to a size zero. She said: 'I think people should be whatever size they naturally are. I'm happy at the size I'm at now. And size zero? That's never been a reality for me because of my butt and boobs. 'A size zero is not really healthy, unless it's natural for someone's body type. But to starve oneself to obtain that, that's just not realistic. It'd be nice if society could just embrace all body types, but clearly we can't.'

MARIAH CAREY'S CONFIDENCE BOOSTER

Mariah Carey thinks playing a dowdy social worker in her new movie has boosted her self-confidence because she no longer worries how she looks.

Mariah Carey thinks playing a dowdy social worker has boosted her self-confidence.

The singer - who is married to Nick Cannon and was previously wed to record company chief Tommy Mottola until 1997 - shed her glamorous image for her role in 'Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire' and says having to spend hours in front of a camera with heavy lighting and no make-up makes her feel more comfortable with staying natural at home.

She explained: "I think it was crucial to dress down. It was tough because making music videos is so different with the costumes, the angles, the lighting, stuff like that.

"In 'Precious', we sat in a fluorescent dentist's office and it was the worst-lit scene of the movie. The over-lighting emphasises the dark stuff under your eyes.

"I guess now I'll feel better about myself when I'm dressed normally at my house and walk past a mirror and see myself. I'll be like, well I've looked worse."

Mariah, 40, says she identified with the story of the movie - which follows a sexually abused, overweight teenager - because of her own previous experiences.

She explained: "The first relationship I was in, without realising it at the time, was abusive emotionally.

"That is in the past, but that helped me get to a place where I could grow and use that stuff in my work."

Mariah Carey Defends Golden Globes Dress

MARIAH Carey insists she dressed modestly for Sunday night’s Golden Globes.

The singer — who hit the red carpet with her husband Nick Cannon — showed off her cleavage in a skin-tight Hervé Léger frock.

But Mariah says her appearance was not meant to get eyes boggling at her own pair of Golden Globes.

“I dressed very conservatively,” she said. “My dress was long and my shoulders were covered. I don’t know what all the fuss is about.”

Carey recently revealed that she’s “very” insecure about her looks“I am very insecure about my looks, and I always have been because of being mixed race,” she said.

“It’s not so weird now, and everyone’s accepting it in a big way, but as a child I felt very, um, out of place and didn’t feel pretty.“When you grow up with that type of insecurity you don’t always feel pretty.”

Quotes of the week (Jan. 17-23)

"A friend said to me the other day: 'Oh yeah, you'll like her –she's like you, she's got a black husband' . And I'm like: 'How many times do I have to tell you – my father was black. My mother's white. In this country that makes you black, do you understand? I know I'm very light-skinned, but stop doing that!' It's one of those things that the world doesn't quite understand."

"Trust is always an issue for me. It's never been easy for me to trust anybody, and that's kind of a sad thing to say, but it's true."

"I'm proud of having enough faith to always get up and try again. And just being strong enough to get through stuff."

Mariah Carey gets £2m rocks from her adoring husband Nick Cannon

Mariah Carey is clearly very Precious to her hubby Nick Cannon. He spent £2million on pink diamond earrings for Mariah - to congratulate her for her Breakthrough Actress award for the film Precious, at Palm Springs Festival last week.

Nick also chartered a jet to fly Mariah and her pals, including Shawn who she's cuddling in our photo, right, to the Bahamas. A source says: "On the jet, a diamond necklace was waiting for Mimi, too." What a diamond geezer!

Mariah Carey NOT Playing Vanessa Hudgens’ Mom!

MARIAH Carey has spoken out to set the record straight on rumors she’s to play Vanessa Hudgens‘ mom in a movie.

Recent reports had claimed the pop diva — who won critical acclaim for her role in Precious — would be teaming up with the High School Musical star for a comedy flick based around the popular X-Factor and American Idol TV talent shows.

“Mariah is eager to capitalize on her acclaimed performance in Precious with another movie,” a source said in December. “There is one project where she would play one half of a mother and daughter singing duo who audition for a TV talent show.

“Vanessa Hudgens has already been approached for the daughter role. The only sticking point seems to be whether Mariah feels comfortable playing mom to a teenager. She’s a little sensitive when it comes to her age.”

But Carey insists this isn’t the case.

“I haven’t heard that,” she told Us Weekly magazine when asked about the reports.

“I’m doing a lot at the same time. I’m on tour right now and stuff.

“There has been a lot of stuff that I’m really excited about!”

Mariah Carey’s Husband: ‘Her Sense of Humor is Impeccable’

MARIAH Carey is “probably the funniest person in the world” — according to her husband, actor/rapper/TV star Nick Cannon.

America’s Got Talent star Cannon says Carey — who he married in April 2008 — constantly makes him laugh.

“She’s probably the funniest person in the world, and I don’t say that about a lot of people ’cause, as a comedian, it’s kind of tough to make me laugh, but she just keeps me rolling, like all day long,” said Nick.

“Her sense of humor and her wit is just — her comedic timing, all of it is just impeccable. She is a jokester.

“Like, we sit around quoting Eddie Murphy movies from the 80s.

“She is one of those type of people, you’d never expect her to be so funny and so comedically brilliant. ”

Like on America’s Got Talent, when just out of nowhere, she pinched me on my ass as we’re walking off the stage. Stuff like that where it’s just — it’s a comedian’s mind, really.”
